Gum Disease: Know "Gingivitis" ; "Periodontitis" to Protect Your Teeth's Foundation

Gum disease mainly falls into two types: reversible gingivitis and irreversible periodontitis.

Stage 1: Gingivitis
Like a "cold" for your gums, it only involves red, swollen gum tissue that bleeds when brushed. The main cause is plaque buildup. With timely and effective cleaning (proper brushing, flossing, professional cleaning), gums can fully recover.

Stage 2: Periodontitis
If gingivitis is left unchecked, inflammation spreads deeper, destroying the bone and ligaments that support your teeth. Symptoms can include receding gums, loose teeth, shifting, or even tooth loss. The bone loss cannot reverse itself and requires professional treatment to manage.

How to protect your gums?

1. Clean thoroughly daily: Use a soft-bristled brush along the gumline and floss consistently.

2. Heed early warnings: Bleeding or persistent redness when brushing are alarms—don't ignore them.

3. Get regular cleanings & check-ups: Every 6-12 months to remove tartar and stop disease progression.

Remember: Your gum health determines your teeth's lifespan. Start by preventing gingivitis to avoid it becoming the "silent thief" of your teeth—periodontitis.
